the bright sadness

by rickboone

jeff zentner's music speaks of the earth's salty people, of small, out-of-the-way mountain villages and of tall evergreens binding them on every side . . . it is a music of bittersweetness, subdued grandeur, and a melancholy grace that gently caresses the soul and leaves you with a sweet ache in your heart. listen closely, and you'll hear the long, lonesome sigh of a weary but beautiful and fine old world.

Hymns to the Darkness delves into the realm of greatness

by Johnny Roulette

Creech Holler's Jeff Zentner has created an aural tour de force with Hymns To The Darkness. The lustrous, rustic instrumentation creates the ideal musical landscape for his accomplished lyrics and subdued vocals. Almost every song on this album is a gift to be treasured. Collectively, they weave a rural, melancholy fabric meant to clothe honest heartache, small town longing, dark confession & redemptive resignation.
In a time of faux Americana, forced twang & exaggerated simplicity, it is absolutely refreshing to find an artist such as Zentner. Every note and syllable rings true. He comes across as the genuine article, as accessible to listeners in Manhattan and San Francisco as he is to someone in Van Horn, Texas.
When he sings "and here we dwell in the palace of the crickets and the fireflies and the nightbirds which sing hymns to the darkness" in the title track, he describes the destination of this musical journey quite aptly.

my favorites: Rusty Town; Fire & Memory; the Vain Hopes of Men

...this would be it. Sitting here in GA, listening to this, everything just seems right. Beautiful music for a beautiful area. I love it.
