Towson Towerlight Review

by Sarah Jean Alexander

Derby Lane shines with their 6-song debut EP. While hard rock and extreme electric chords are absent, the boys settle for pure melodies and honest lyrics. The southern Maryland setting of the band is evident in their sound, a pleasant change for ringing ears.

Travel is the product of months of labor and hard work. As the band continued to develop, adding new members to its name, the music also evolved. The band now consists of 5 members.

"Johnson City" and "Henry Kissing Her" are my personal favorites on the album. Both songs encompass the original sound of the band, keeping instrumental excitement to a minimum.

That being said, Derby Lane doesn't leave their audience sleeping. Quite the opposite: fans are left in a positive mood, with little stress or worry that many other bands seem to pile onto their listeners.

Vocalist Jeremy Mohler sings flawlessly as he is supported by his band of talented musicians. Guitarist Nathan O'Dell shines in "Plastic Flowers," and makes playing his six-stringed instrument sound easy.

Music shouldn't be a chore, and DL understands that. The fourth track on the album, "Ivory," allows the members to play uninterrupted and demonstrate their talent. As the only track without lyrics, "Ivory" still meshes well into the album as their sound as a whole remains constant.

It's hard to find music you can listen to no matter what obstacle the world might throw at you. Regardless of the situation, Derby Lane's Travel seems to fit the mold. A hard day, a good day, a boring day--nothing can find itself far from the audible therapy of their sound.

good people, good band!

I hadn't heard of Derby Lane until my friend told me about them a few months ago. I listen to them a few times on MySpace, and saw them live. I'm picky about bands, and I like Derby Lane. They're even better live! Johnson City gets stuck in your head right away. I highly reccomend them!

INCREDIBLE!
