soulful, lush jazz
by tempermentalentityRay's second album absolutely showcases his mature playing and lush sound. Ray isn't afraid of going big, getting romantic, or picking up the tempo 'til your fingers are snapping. His influences seem to range wide (Oscar Peterson, Ornette Coleman, Chopin, Rachmaninoff) but never cloud his playing, never dilute this soulful sophmore outing of this fine jazz pianist. If available, the liner notes are worth the price of the download alone.
Rare Combo...and combo
by Rather BigMatt Ray manages to balance clarity and experimentation in a way that confounds most pianist/composers. His flights of fancy are always exciting, always strange, always original. But they somehow never veer into the self-indulgent or annoying. He's a classicist at heart, but a playful one. I rarely purchase instrumental Jazz because it can leave me cold, but Ray never abandons the heart at the center of his tunes...even when he's testing the margins of his considerable viruosity. Oh, yeah, and this recording sounds like a million bucks. Bravo. Buy it.
