I was able to experience Kennedy's Kitchen live at an Irish festival; they are a lively and talented crew! The flute player also sings and composes music. He is particularly captivating.

Love for the Kitchen

I've been following Kennedy's Kitchen since '99, when I first saw them at a Monday night Jam at Lula's Cafe. Now I see them at the Hearth and other venues when I can. They're a lively bunch yet down to earth too. It's wonderful to have their albums available via iTunes.

Kennedy's Kitchen comes of age

I've listened to this band's recordings from the beginning. (Disclosure: 20 years ago, I played in another band with John Kennedy, Seamaisin, but have no professional connection with Kitchen.) Their previous albums were delightful, with some items (like the Bridget Coyle recitation) that are true gems. But this album represents a leap to another level. It is one of those magical albums that I listen to over and over, and if you ask me what my favorite track is, it is usually the one I'm listening to at the moment.

Nolan has become a really fine whistle player, and an even better composer. Whistle players who listen to this album are going to want to learn the tunes. (And don't miss the playful names of many of them, especially you Monty Python fans.)

John has become a first-rate guitar accompanist: he adds to every arrangement, complementing the soloist rather than competing for the listener's attention. It's not surprising that he won Silver at the All-Ireland a few years back, given what you hear here. His vocals are the best I've heard them on recording. For those who have heard John in person, this is the first album where you hear what you hear on stage. The closer, Isle of Inisfree, just leaves me sitting stock still when the album ends, not wanting to move and spoil the mood.

The vocal blending on the a cappella Life of a Country Boy is a real joy to listen to. When I first heard it, I must have played it back 20 times. There is not much close harmony on the album, but this is a group that has really learned how to sing as a unit, and I'm hoping for more of the same in the future.

Bob's songs are enchanting. Gold and Silver Days has the feel of something Garrison Keillor would mesmerize an audience with on Prairie Home Companion.

I ordered a bunch of the CDs and sent them out as Christmas presents for 2006. It's an album that will please Irish music fans and everyone else alike.
