This CD tells the story of a musical monkey on a quest to write the world's most perfectest song. As he travels he collects new members for his International Band of Misunderstood Geniuses. Song tracks alternate with narrative tracks. Tracks that stand on their own are numbers 3, 8 (an XM Kids #1 hit), 10, 12, and 14. But really you'll want to get the whole thing.

Every moment of this CD is packed with music, interesting voices, sound effects, humor, and cultural references. You'll find something new to notice and appreciate even after 100 listens. The tunes are infectious and kids will love the wacky characters and situations.

Be forewarned that this is part one of a series. The story line is left hanging and the CD ends with an "intermission." So if you buy this one and your kids love it (which they probably will), you'll be in for a second purchase soon. (As of March 2008, the 2nd CD is nearly complete but not yet available.)

Great storytelling and fun music!

The Ballad of Phineas McBoof is really more of a children's story than a collection of family music. It deserves to be listened to as a complete album so you can follow along with the travels of Phineas and the introductions to the various characters that he meets along the way during his adventures. The story is mostly fun, but there is a positive message for kids (and adults?) about change and chasing your dreams.

Despite the way the album tells this story, there are a few tracks that work as standalone songs if you're just looking for one or two downloads on iTunes. I would recommend "Don't Monkey With My Heart" as an upbeat Beatles-esque tune and "What My Robot Said to Me" which has a funky country feel to it. "The Monster Dance" track, which is hard to define because it blends a few genres, is another song that kids like. Some of the remaining tracks are musical themes to introduce the characters or background for the voice narration that tells the story, so I'd have a hard time recommending those unless you buy the whole album.

The musicianship is surprisingly good for this type of album. If you're a fan of real musicians playing real instruments, you'll get that on this album. Sure, there's keyboards and sound effects strewn throughout (it is children's music), but there's also some great saxophone and guitar in here too.

Overall, a fun listen for kids in the 3-8 range that won't make parents insane. 5 stars.
