Was there at the Beginning
by PghPortmanI was at the first CD release party these folks had at Rosebud. Had a buddy in the band. Still have that CD. Great show. This band is more about the fusion of sight and sound than just the sound.
If you like the music, you have to see their shows!
by PittsburghChrisThis is at least Squonk's sixth release, and their first on iTunes - it would be great if some of their earlier releases, especially the out-of-print cd's, could also appear.
This release represents an evolution and expansion of their sound, adding electric guitars and effects as well as some hip-hop influence to their quirky sonic foundation - accordion, wind synth, upright bass, percussion and keyboards squeezing out arrangements based on everything from classical and folk to experimental, jazz and rock.
The most important thing to know about a Squonk Opera show is that it is a full theatrical, musical narrative performance. The music on the cd only gives a taste of the full experience, which includes elaborate sets, videos, costumes, dancers, props, puppets and audience interaction. Their currently touring show, (Your Hometown Name Here) The Opera, is playing in many venues in the U.S., so if you like the music, take the first opportunity to see them live and you'll be darn glad you did!
