iTunes Review

The Small Stars get serious on their second outing with a soulful, rocking romp through a rock-pop-country-blues catalog of vices and heartache. Engineered by legendary mixer Bob Clearmountain, The Small Stars’ venerable talents are on glorious display here. The musical sophistication underlying the catchy melodies and hit-worthy lyrics raises each song from emotional depths, pulling the listener into the pool for a satiating and slyly humorous paddle around life’s deep, dark aquarium. Highlights include the Broadway treatment of marriage in “Love Is Grand,” the cotton candy rendering of adultery in “Carnival” (the best cut on the album), and the plaintive cry for a better life in “Bombaderos y Pistoleros.” The poignant ballad “Girl Trouble” deftly echoes Dylan and mid-period Stones, and just when you think it can’t get any better, the super smooth Joe Ely appears on “That’s What God Made Whiskey For,” to spell out D-I-V-O-R-C-E from the bottom of a bottle. Tijuana Dreams is an impressive collection, signaling the band’s readiness to find their way out of the lounge and onto the center stage.

Ready for the big time.

There's nothing like the experience of seeing The Small Starts in a tiny lounge in Austin, Tx. With a cabaret band so full of life and energy it's no wonder that this album is as good as it is. Like the iTunes review says, It's time to step out of the lounge and onto a bigger stage. Congrats boys!

It has a little bit of everything I like: pop, rock, country, Latin, ... Each song is different than the next, and they are all excellent! I have listened to this disk over and over, and it never gets boring. I highly recommend giving it a listen.

It's all about the songs

It's been a long time since I've heard such a perfectly crafted collection of songs as The Small Stars’ "Tijuana Dreams." From the opening kick-drum toy piano circus sideshow beat of "Let's Hit The Town" to the plaintive cry of the final guitar chord on "Tijuana Dreams," this album is pure listening pleasure. Fronted by Fastball guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Miles Zuniga, The Small Stars have proven that they are no side project. Their sophomore effort marks a definite move from their Reno lounge band shtick origins to mature pop-rock band. And this move is fueled by the strength of the songwriting from the team of Zuniga and long-time partner Jeff Groves.

Never afraid to stretch the boundaries of their music, the Small Stars span every genre here, from pure pop to Country to Latin to flat out rock 'n roll. There isn't a bad song on this record, but standouts include the pop gem "Sweet Sweet Sweet" (the first hit single from the record), the satiric country ballad "That's What God Made Whiskey For" (featuring the great Joe Ely on vocals) and, my favorite, the Latin infused "Bombarderos Y Pistoleros," which tells the true tale of violence along the Texas-Mexico border. If you listen closely to these songs, you'll hear a story being told; a story of hope, love, betrayal and despair. Although the ending may not be a happy one, the tale is told with a sense of humor and with tongue firmly in cheek, making for a fun and interesting ride. In fact, this is the most fun I’ve had listening to a record in years.

Highly recommended. In fact, what are you waiting for? Download it now!
