A Masterpiece

by Laurie McClain

Danny Ellis has created a masterpiece in 800 Voices, My Childhood in an Irish Orphanage. This is not just a great album, it is a deeply moving TRUE story as told by the boy who lived it, channeled with impeccable insight through the man he is today. Track one, the title cut, "800 Voices," begins the moment Danny enters the 800-bed infamous Artane Industrial School for Boys in Dublin in the ‘50s; while the last song, "The Day I Left Artane" depicts the happenings on the day he left as a man on his own, as all the Artane boys must when they reach 16 years of age. As each song plays, many deep layers of his bittersweet journey unfold and grab hold of your heart in different new ways upon each repeated listen. I have heard this record countless times and still find surprises. Not one word is wasted, and all the songs would stand alone as masterful poetry. The music and instrumentation are a gorgeous backdrop to Danny's expressive, honest-to-the-core voice -- and what a beautiful voice, full of tenderness, and at times, enchanting mischief. This epic tale of survival and triumph of spirit in very dire circumstances is not depressing, as the inextricable sadness is tempered with moments of hilarity and transcendent joy. I will always treasure this album.

Wow. This is really sad, but beautiful.

This album is really sad, but also incredibly beautiful. "800 Voices" My Childhood In An Irish Orphanage, tells the story of so many young people kept in these homes, even if their parents were alive. Danny Ellis has a beautiful vioce. Congratulations.
