Album Review

This Arlington, VA, band hones in on a sound that elusively slips around between styles of rock as if it was a time machine with a few loose fuses. One moment it's a roots rock sound, the next a tight, nervous new wave beat, then a fuzzbox kicks in around a catchy melody and it is almost like pre-Nirvana grunge. This set of songs suffers from excessive repetition of several devices that would have come across as more clever if used less frequently. And as a whole, the songs sound too similar to each other, almost like a continuing story that the listener might not want to hear the end of. The voice of leader Karl Straub is really beautiful, though, often bringing a song amazingly to life from one breath to the next. Several standout tracks are worthy of attention, especially the dark, disturbing "Acid Black" and the lyrically captivating "Rock Salt."

Oddly great and also just OK

I picked this cd up after hearing some Graverobbers stuff on the really good Americana Motel album, thought it was OK, and after a couple listens it hit the shelf. After getting an ipod and loading all my music, songs from the cd would come up on the shuffle and I would stop and check out what was playing because every song sounded great- better than I remembered. I think the lead CD review on this has it right in a couple ways. As a complete cd, there is something about the whole package that sort of runs on.

Yet, individually, the songs come off great. They are clever, catchy, and engaging. This is a fault to be found with quite a few bands of this sort of genre (Old 97's and Jayhawks have always struck me this way). However, nearly every individual track here is a great radio track and plays great in a playlist. I'd also bet they sound great live. Worth getting, without a doubt. Even if it doesn't crack your favorite album list, there's a good chance that one of the songs will sneak into your favororite song list.
