Album Review

Having a female lead singer isn't mandatory for a trip-hop group, but it has certainly worked well for a long list of them — and Karmacoda is among the American groups that should be included on that list. Heather Pierce, Karmacoda's lead singer, is clearly a major asset for this San Francisco-based unit; she favors a smooth, sensuous, easy-on-the-ears vocal style that is perfect for the sleek grooves found on Illuminate. Pierce doesn't provide all of the lead vocals on this 2007 release — there are some male lead vocals as well — but she is the main singer and handles herself enjoyably well on a 52-minute disc that combines trip-hop with adult alternative pop/rock and frequently incorporates soul elements. This is an American group with a lot of British influences, which range from Portishead to Massive Attack to Everything But the Girl; Pierce, in fact, has obviously gotten plenty of inspiration from Portishead's Beth Gibbons and Everything But the Girl's Tracey Thorn. But Karmacoda is an appealing group in their own right, and one of the things they have going for them is their appreciation of R&B. Infectious grooves like "Hope Over Hope," "Something" (not to be confused with the Beatles classic), "Delay the Sun," and "Glow" aren't R&B in the strict sense, but they demonstrate that R&B overtones can be a tasty ingredient even if a group essentially has a pop outlook. Although trip-hop has been a largely British phenomenon, it has by no means been an exclusively British phenomenon — and Illuminate is a pleasing example of what the U.S. has to offer in the trip-hop department.

While the music is excellent on "Illuminate" it is Heather Pierce's sweet vocals that steal the show. Key tracks: Something, Make Like Mine, Turn & Glow.

Great lead vocal and teacher!

I personally know the girl lead. She is very nice and happens to be my vocal instructor. Their music is rock meets techno and is fun and funky for all! EnJoY!

A Soundtrack for Late Night SF

If Karmacoda didn’t exist we’d have to invent them. This band walks with credibility as members of the new urban San Francisco late-night sound.

To get a hook on Karmacoda’s nonesuch music, surprise yourself by Googling some of Picasso’s early work. A realist painter who showed a mastery of the zeitgeist before writing his own rules for art. If Karmacoda’s early releases demonstrate the same mindset, then their latest, Illuminate, is their mature and deliberate break with convention. Illuminate sounds less like a film soundtrack than Karmacoda’s first discs, which is ironic since some of its tracks appear on the very pro-looking indie film, Voyeur.

As electronica goes it’s very listenable. This groove is downtempo trip hop, but with a haunting, sometimes melancholy, vocal fix throughout. It feels dangerous to listen to it.

The hits are probably Spectre and Turn. The latter because of Heather’s beautiful voice entwined with a folkish acoustic guitar melody. Make Like Me has a genuinely sweet flow, a backbone which thumps just slightly and a ringing distant piano line which we hear again on Skylines. The musicianship of Karmadoda is apparent throughout, although the duets of Heather and B work better in some places than others. The album itself is produced within an inch of its life.

It will be interesting to see if Karmacoda releases tracks from Illuminate to the DJ hipsters for a remix album as they did with Evidence (Altered Evidence). Music from Altered Evidence always anchors my iPod workout mix and road trip soundtracks.
