Album Review

Those familiar with Sete's jazzy bossa nova work on Fantasy might be somewhat surprised by the material on Vol. 1. The lighthearted tone of his collaborations with Vince Guaraldi, as well as his other efforts for that label, while not to be taken lightly, don't even begin to approach the introspective moods to be found on Vol. 1. The more traditional numbers, like the opener "Vira Mundo Penba," take on a sadness that goes beyond what most people understand about Brazilian saudade, while "Macumba" is just downright dark. There is much to enjoy in this set. Not only does it showcase Sete's mesmerizing guitar work, but also a depth not found in the majority of his catalog. One could perhaps describe this music as a combination of Sete's original style with the probing, existential nature of John Fahey's America. This session was reissued by the Windham Hill subsidiary Lost Lake Arts in 1981 and retitled Ocean.

One Guitar

by Matthew Wainwright

This has long been a favorite record of mine. Back when I was in college (late 90s) I spend a lot of time in record stores buying crap records hoping for one good find. Frankly I could have been doing a million other things and I wasted a lot of money. However, the fact that I managed to find this little piece of obscuring made it almost worth my while. Bola Sete can do with ONE Guitar what few people can do with 2 or three instruments. Sort of the Brazilian answer to John Fahey. "Let Go" and "Xengo Xengo Xerengo" are favorites.

A great solo guitar recording...but

It's been over a year since I purchased Ocean Memories on iTunes and noticed that several of the performances are duplicated, but with different names. Sort on the playing times. You'll see for example that Dindi and Ocean Waves, both at 4:36, are the identical song. After reporting this to iTunes, I was permitted another download, but with the same result. They've obviously done nothing to correct the situation in over a year, and as I've now noticed here, iTunes has removed the previous "cautionary message" I submitted last year. This is an impressive collection of solo guitar. Bola Sete was one of a kind, but unfortunately, the music here is not. You'll only get half of what you thought you were getting.
