Singing jazzy pop with soul, Lorraine Gervais’ sweet contralto voice (the lowest of female voices) provides a lush listening atmosphere on A WORLD APART. The California native traverses a heartfelt journey on this delightful recording… from serious to lighthearted, sultry to playful, all the while keeping the stylings unique. She hails from a musical family. Musical women, to be exact… her grandmother sang and played the blues all the way from Chicago to the West Coast in the 1930’s and Lorraine’s mother studied with master vocal coaches of her time. Likewise, Ms. Gervais began her musical career at a young age, (really young if you count her singing at age 5 with her mother at public events); she was 14 when she toured with her high school jazz band. In the 1970’s the talented chanteuse played every gig imaginable along the California coast performing every kind of genre imaginable from disco, Motown and country to pop, rock and R&B. Nowadays, Lorraine makes her home in the Nevada City area where she packs jazz concert events on a regularly basis. The release of A WORLD APART is a cause for celebration for the silky-voiced singer… she is accompanied by a stellar band including Tower of Power’s keyboardist Roger Smith. From the low and sweet “Before I’m Gone” to the wistful cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “The Glow,” A WORLD APART definitely sets this vocalist apart from the average and closer to the hearts of music fans.

A World Apart - Is Far Above

If you are searching to hear strong, vibrant, female jazz and blues vocalists, then you should check out this latest offering by singer/songwriter Lorraine Gervais on, "A World Apart".
A CD of eclectic arrangements keeps you interested and enjoying the innovative ride with a mix of originals and some cool covers from Joni to Aretha, Leon Russell and more.
"A World Apart" makes it clear that Lorraine has been artistically inspired, having written many of the titles on the CD. Along with her stellar vocals the CD solidifies her place as one of the West Coasts most gifted and impeccable jazz singer songwriters.
Simple yet elegant back up on bass and guitar with intriguing piano and occasional organ, add spice to the mix. Lorraine is like a storyteller using her stunning signature vocal range to weave images that take the listener away in bliss, add to that a impeccable well crafted instrumental backup and it is a clear winner. "A World Apart" showcases her luxuriant voice - no voice compositing needed - she has what it takes to belt it out in the likes of Aretha Franklin, Joan Osborne, or Joni Mitchell, with just the right mix of edginess, tangy instrumentals and elegant arrangements to rank it far above the standard jazz offering.
I highly recommend it.

Soulful, Strong, and Sweet

I think all artists are at their best when they bare their souls. When the artist is also particularly talented and adept, magic happens. Here you have magic in spades -- Lorraine's originals are personal and beautiful, and her interpretations of songs by Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, Jacqui Naylor, and Bonnie Raitt are original and moving. Musical prestidigitation!
