by Kyl“The Meaning of Grace”, the first studio recording by Des Moines-based band Lady Blue, defies neat categorization. While tracks like “The Gospel of the Blues” and “The Meaning Of Grace” are gospel-inspired blues tracks; “”Bluz Becuz Of U “ and “Sin” are straight-up blues tracks; and “Virtue And Vice” and “Deacon's Train” straddle that razor-thin line between blues and rock.
As for the “untitled” track 16, it’s Lady Blue’s take on “Jesus On the Mainline”. If you purchase no other tracks from this CD, you should definitely get this one.
For fans who are accustomed to Tina Haase Findlay’s numerous performances through the years at “Jazz in July” events, this CD might come as a bit of a surprise. For fans who’ve seen Lady Blue perform, this CD reflects the energy and passion that Lady Blue bring to their performances. The band doesn’t hold back, giving this CD a feel reminiscent of their live performances.
Ultimately, Lady Blue should be seen live to appreciate their full talent. With that said, this CD offers a great opportunity for people to experience Lady Blue who’ve not yet been to a show, and a great way for fans to get their fix between Lady Blue’s shows.
