A wonderful album, but not folk

by Equipoise

This album was originally released in 1986, along with Rhodes I and Rearmament. Happy had been recording music at Cathedral Sound Studios in Rensselaer, New York after the owner, Pat Tessitore, heard Happy sing. She had started work there as an apprentice engineer but after Tessitore was exposed to her talent, he encouraged her to get all of her songs down on tape. He also introduced Rhodes to Kevin Bartlett, who owned a cassette-only record label (Aural Gratification) to release his own music. Bartlett encouraged Happy to gather up all the songs she had recorded to date and release them on his label. She gathered the songs, sorted them according to style, and released Rhodes I, Rhodes II and Rearmament at the same time. They, and her fourth album Ecto (1987), were released on hand-dubbed cassettes until 1992, when she re-released all four albums on CD. The monster on the cover, not exactly reflective of the music inside, was painted by Happy.

These songs were written by Happy between the ages of 14 and 21, and show a bright, fierce talent. The songs are original, yet familiar, and run the gamut from the breezy "Come Here" to the sly humor of "To The Funnyfarm" to the creepy "Asylum Master" and, as with all of Happy's music, you can enjoy the songs just for her music and phenomenal voice, but will also find wonders in her interesting lyrics if you choose to delve. Even though several songs feature Happy on acoustic guitar, none of this music is folk. It's a genre of its own (fans call it "Ecto music"). There are no other musicians in the studio on any song from Happy's first four albums, it's all her.
