Amazingly pure Robisons

by Abbeybythesea

Charlie, Bruce and Kelley have to be 3 of the most amazingly talented pure writers/singers/musicians/performers. Bruce especially writes music that just cuts through to your soul and cries out for you to listen. I hope he NEVER stops writing...Please!!! I've awaited each and every release with the same anticipation for 10 years now and I'm never disappointed! I'm usually breathless with the raw clarity. Thank you!

Gets better with repeated listening

This little album may take some time to grow on you. It helps to listen to it a few times over and over when you're driving down the highway alone. I am still not sure what Bruce is trying to do with the title track. It's totally unlike anything he has done before. But that may just be the point. Still for all its boldness, the title track is the weakest song in this set. The others range from intimate and razor sharp -- My Baby Now, 23 A, What Makes You Say-- to tender story-telling as in When It Rains, to toe-tapping fun -- Lifeline. None of these songs are trifling. They are all written with the craft, subtlety, and cleverness that put Bruce Robison at the top of Texas' considerable list of song-writers. With his own recording studio at his disposal, Mr. Robison has acquired the creative freedom to produce music in his own distinctive style with no commercial trade-offs. It pays off handsomely. Kelly Willis adds her special touch with some harmony vocals, and the band musicians all fill their parts admirably as well. My only other quibble is with Anywhere But Here, which is actually an engaging reminiscence of Hill Country youth, but it seems to borrow it's tune from Bruce's older song The First Thing About Mary, which I find to be a bit distracting as I listen.

Classic

This is a great album. The 2nd track, When It Rains, may be the best song Bruce has ever written, which is saying something considering the hits he has written. The 3rd track, Lifeline, is a catchy pop tune that resembles Fleetwood Mac with some 70's country twang. The final track, 23A, is so good that it is almost showing off-like someone who has mastered the art of being able to write a song about anything and make it this good.

On the technical side, the album sounds great sonically. Nice textures, well mixed, really nice subtle touches here and there.
