by seamus_1Happy accidents of circumstance are the soul of improvised music, a point vividly proved by this new duo session from two well-traveled New Yorkers. Pianist Myra Melford has played an active role in the city’s music life for nearly two decades. Canadian violinist-violist Tanya Kalmanovitch is a more recent arrival, and a member of the upstart collective Brooklyn Jazz Underground. The two were brought together by chance (and a fast-thinking promoter) at the 2003 Guelph Jazz Festival.
Lacking material on that occasion, the pair simply played—in the process discovering that common experiences made them uniquely compatible. Both Melford and Kalmanovitch originally trained as classical players before turning to jazz. Each spent time studying in India: Melford absorbing Northern harmonium techniques, Kalmanovitch immersed in Southern Carnatic traditions.
Those influences and intersections can be heard on Heart Mountain, an exquisitely recorded live set from February 2005. The disc’s 18 short, gemlike free improvisations include mysterious textural scrabbles and aggressive jousts, microtonal meditations and limpid, drone-based reveries. The most impressive quality of the set is the sheer selflessness with which two strong players merge into a common spirit. A traditional ballad, “Kailash,” closes the set on a note of gentle sublimity.
