Album Review

Basque, a New York, NY-based duo, returns with more of their own creative sound interpretations in an MP3.com-released sampler. This is quite different stuff — vocals used as sound collage, overlaid in layers, echoing, whispering, calling. It has a slightly eerie, yet earthly sound, from "Kamehameha" to "Orange Colored Sky." While those accustomed to more traditional vocal forms (as in, words, not sound phrases) may feel a bit baffled by it, anyone able to relax and just go with where it's flowing will likely find it an interesting and intriguing experience. Basque has certainly carved their own niche out in the wide open fields of music, and this is a distinct and unique sound. An acquired taste, perhaps, yet also one worth acquiring.
