More incredible work by Robert Rich
by Socrates3000Illumination is a an baffling album; both in its brilliance and chilling starkness. Rich uses cold, minimal and focused textures to convey a sense of exploration of the land of pure thought.
He accomplishes this because Rich is an absolute master of *silence* and how to use it. Especially in this work, Rich deftly uses sounds, wispers, bells and drones just above the level of silence to create a feeling of deep mystery and search for...something. This makes perfect sense considering the album's obvious theme, and Rich's ability to convey such a rarified intellectual theme is probably the best in music.
Listen to it at night and after reading some philosophy for best effect :)
Rich Returns with a Winner
by el maharajahDramatic, focused and coldly beautiful, this is one of the best dark ambient CDs of 2007. Rich has a knack for aurally describing the awesome nature of physical existence, and these pieces thoroughly execute the concept. Highly recommended.
