A Musical Singer and a Musical Album

by WillyQ

Charmaine is great, a really unique sultry voice that doesn't sound like anyone else. What really impressed me however about this album is how musically the band plays and how musically Charmaine responds to them. Check out Dahil Sa Yo for an example of how they switch the beat and the feel. Very inventive. A lot of unexpected moments. This is one I want to start right over when it's done. I'd call it a minor masterpiece.

Style Over Substance

by PeerGynt

I'm no purist, but there's far too much cooing, breathy passages, and silly phrasing in this album. Every song begins to sound the same. Especially appalling is Ms. Clamor's rendition of "Dahil Sa 'Yo," performed in smoky cabaret style (which is fine, if done well) that seems almost a spoof titled "How To Sing 'Dahil Sa' Yo' As A Nymphomaniac." Consider the phrasing: Tanging (stop) Ikaw (stop) Sinta (stop) Ang Aking (stop) Pag (pause) a (pause) sa. It's like listening to a Western Union telegram. The same mannerisms are applied to all the songs. Heavy in atmosphere, not enough musicianship.

Amazing Talent

by BobbyBubbi

Charmaine's singing talent made the tiny islands of the Philippines seems so big. And she's someone that will just grab you and haunt you when she performs live. Her contralto voice has different layers of color to it. Her low register is just amazing, I can see why she is compared to the great Sarah Vaughn and Nina Simone. You don't have to be an expert in her native tounge to understand what the lyrics meant, you can just feel her emotions on a vocal standpoint.
She's someone that will make all women musicians especially if you're a woman of color be proud of who you are.
