Album Review

Anyone who thinks the great and glorious days of power pop are over is presumably unaware of the work of John Hoskinson, who has a way with a hook and a melody that's little short of thrilling and a sense of humor that ensures he won't follow the unfortunate path into sappiness of Eric Carmen. Kicking off with a superb Brian Wilson pastiche (complete with breathy harmonies) about falling in love with the wrong girl, Pancho Fantastico moves from style to style with an easy confidence and dazzling skill — witness the jazzy bounce of "Creepy," the joyously woozy psychedelia of "Guaranteed," the blue-eyed soul stomp of "Make It Come True," the wink and nod to Badfinger of "She Makes Me Yawn," the Brill Building polish of "Just Think it Over," the acoustic-based sadness of "We Can Never Be Friends" and the punky energy of "Please Stay Off My Side." Hoskinson and his talented crew of studio helpers bring these tunes to life with the shape-shifting skill of a chameleon, hitting the right note throughout, and Hoskinson's vocals can roar or sigh with equal gravity. In the great tradition of pop songwriting, Hoskinson appears to have some problems with women, but he also seems to have a sense of humor about it, and his romantic travails, played alternately straight and for laughs, are fine accompaniment to these 13 samples of pop genius. Smart, funny and a joy to hear, Pancho Fantastico is a minor masterpiece from a guy who hopefully has more tunes this good up his sleeve.

Pancho is magnifico!

I love this cd; it’s pure pop/rock magic! Every song is unique, but they all have John’s sweet voice singing lovely melodies and smart lyrics. My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE song on the cd is the soaring and retro “Just Think It Over”. I can listen to it non-stop, and it’s definitely on my list for the Top Ten Songs of 2007!

Viva Pancho Fantastico!

Pancho Fantastico is a superhero of an album, saving listeners with discerning taste from corporate schlock, one great song after another.

With 13 stylistically varied songs, stand-outs for me are “Creepy,” “Just Think It Over,” and “We Can Never Be Friends” (listen for a terrific acoustic guitar solo on this one).

Thanks to John Hoskinson's finely honed pop sensibility and enormous songwriting talent, Pancho’s in heavy rotation on my iPod.

Pop with a twist!

John Hoskinson is a true poet. His lyrics are excellent. The song arrangements are pure genious, from incredible stripped down acoustic songs, "We Can Never Be Friends" to full-on orchestra-style arrangements, "I am Not Surprised." These twisted pop songs, like "Creepy" will have you wondering, "Why can't more people write great love songs like this one?" If you can't tell your lover how creepy they are, who can you tell? If you're laughing, you will get the twisted humor that John Hoskinson shares with his listeners. He has a soft side too, try "Only One By Your Side." These songs can take you from a lonely living room, to a sunny, bike ride in paris. Can't wait for the next cd from John Hoskinson!
