Dark and Brooding

by Brigitte Godot

Once upon a time, albums like John Randolph's "Shadows" would have been considered staples of FM radio play, but in the era of beatboxes and rap "artists", the dominance of the singer-songwriter writing complex melodies with intelligent lyrics played on his/her own instrument (guitar, usually, but in Randolph's case, everything) has sadly passed. But not expired. "Shadows" is a dark and brooding album, and it is a testimony to its cohesiveness of vision that it is, despite its artistic excellence, often difficult to listen to; it's nakedly honest exploration of depression is not something every listener will appreciate. While not a concept album, every song on the CD, with the exception of "Romeo's Lament" (in which Randolph steps outside himself to explore the guilty conscience of the real life title character, who failed to prevent genocide in Rwanda ), can be seen as the record of the breakup of a persoanl realtionship, most likely between Randolph and a spouse or lover, and it's concomitant despair. Such heartfelt material is not lightly entered into by the singer or the listener, but the pain evident in evey song, even the superficially upbeat "Losing You", is real, and something 9/10ths of todays pop music can't handle.
I look forward to John Randolph's next offering, and hope he provides some relief from the shadows with it. In the meantime, if you aren't lucky enough to catch him live, he performs on a regular basis in Second Life under the name "Zen Revnik." Check him out.

Gorgeous and Haunting

by S. Phelps

I love all the songs on this cd, but my favorite is the haunting Romeo's Lament - an account of the Rawandan genocide as seen through the eyes of Col. Romeo Delaire. Rewind and Shadows are two more favorites that deal with typical relationship issues in a fresh and innovative way. These are not your garden variety pop songs - very listenable on the surface, but if you like to listen to lyrics on a deeper level you will discover the substance that is all too often absent in today’s pop music.

He represents the DIY movement nicely as he recorded the cd in his home studio and played every instrument. The musicianship and lyrics coupled with John's clear, soaring voice rounds out a perfect listening experience.
