Terrific addition to a jazz (and non-jazz) library

by shaynar

David Hughes defies being type-cast as a smooth jazz bass player on his strong second solo album, Foreign Shores. Hughes has ensembled a stellar group of jazz musicians, including special guests Gregg Karukas (piano), Eric Marienthal (saxophone), and singer Justin Guarini. Hughes authored all the tracks on the album with the exception of "I Wish," the Stevie Wonder classic. With Hughes' bass at its core, the album offers up an intriguing fusion of modern jazz and funk, with plenty of enthusiastic exploration by the album's performers.

Highlights include the quick tempoed "Brazil," which concludes with the engaging Guarini exchanging vocal riffs with Katisse Buckingham on the flute, the wide-ranging and inspired "Foreign Shores," the high-energy funk and groove take on "I Wish," and the infectious album closer, Kathmandu.

Hughes represents the best of the up and coming crop of jazz composer/musicians and this album is a satisfying addition to any modern jazz fan's music library.
