A Nice Surprise

by lollipop016

I got the AMAZING opportunity to work with Roberta at an acting/singing/dancing day camp in Rochester, NY called Summer Stars. She is one of the nicest people you will ever meet in your lifetime! I don't think she said one negative thing to us throughout the entire two weeks, but she was always encouraging and helping us improve our skills. Her CD is very different from what she does on stage, but it shows off her amazing vocal talent just as much. Personally, I wouldn't expect her to sing jazz music after meeting her, but I like hearing that side of her.

Jazzy Broadway

by Mark J.

The fact that Chicago musical theater actress Roberta Duchak is a musical theater actress--and an extremely gorgeous musical theater actress at that--usually sends out red flags in jazz musicians bolstered by overwrought renditions of "My Funny Valentine" on jam session nights. But Duchak more then proves that she's not a poser in this, her first album. Even if the program consists entirely of show tunes, there is no Mermanesque belting or semioperatics here--Duchak gives each song a warm, intimate reading that is often funkier than what she's been allowed to do onstage. When combined with a solid band of Nashville jazzers (yes, they do exist) led by pianist Phil Swann and reedist Jin Hoke, the result is easy listening in the best possible terms. We especially like the unorthodox treatment of the "Rent" anthem "Seasons of Love" and Cy Coleman's sassy "What Don't Know About Women" from "City of Angels," but you can't do wrong with any cut, as Duchak's naturally beautiful voice leads the way. Duchak is currently playing piano in a musical in Chicago (the woman was a virtual child prodigy) because she wants to get her chops back up to lead a trio and play an instrument while singing. This album indicates that musical theater's possible loss will be jazz's gain--and that Diana Krall may have to look to her laurels.
