Incredible Percussion Orchestra from Senegal!
by SteveH in BostonThese young men from Dakar, Senegal, are the "new generation" of the Faye or "Sing Sing" family of musicians. Carrying forward the gëwël (griot) tradition of their ancestors, in their first album they present traditional Wolof songs of praise and celebration. The sabar style of drumming is unique to the Senegambia region of West Africa, and the Sing Sing Juniors are some of its most powerful new performers. Featuring complex arrangements with layers of shifting rhythmic phrases, most of these pieces are made for dancing! Look for "sabar dance" on your favorite video site to see what this music makes people do!
This album is a must for any lover of percussion or world music.
