Album Review

It's the same old story: men and women (or men and men, or women and women) meet, fall in love, and, sooner or later, one leaves. In one sense, the opening cut of Never Look Back tells yet another story of another man — who should've know better but of course didn't — being left behind. Tom Gillam is smart enough to know, however, that this story, no matter how clever the singer/songwriter might be, is a cliché before the ink dries, leading him to offer the clever title, "Another Break-Up Song." That doesn't mean that Gillam, despite the rocking backdrop and a well-delivered lyric, escapes walking on familiar ground, but he does make the point that living through the pain is never a cliché for the person who has to live through it (especially if he or she just happens to be a singer/songwriter). Never Look Back's original songs, mostly by Gillam and guitarist Craig Simon, are bolstered by solid rock arrangements and background vocals. Gillam easily moves between the heavier country-rock of "Devil in My Heart" and the slow blues-rock of "Where Is Bobby Gentry?" Gillam never attempts to reinvent the singer/songwriter genre on Never Look Back, but he does manage to deliver a consistent and enjoyable set. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., All Music Guide

Kick a%#!!!

What a great effort, was lucky enough to catch this band at a Texas Hill Country music festival. This band is Hot. They stole the show that included some of the greats, Robert Earl, Ray Wylie, Marty Stuart, Joe Ely and more... A jam band crossover that can play with the best!

Never Look Back is a worthy follow up to Shake My Hand. "Carolina" is a superb track. Buy this record - buy all his stuff. Better yet, go see a live show with Tom and his band, Tractor Pull, and you'll be shocked that these guys aren't better known.

Americana, Rockin' Country.. whatever.. This cooks from the Heart and burns -s from the Soul

Tom enjoys a staid collaboration with his band and they remain loyal enough to allow Gillam to grow as a deeper songwriter with every self-produced track they stir up. Add an acoustic guitar or two and this music would rival the Eagles for capturing that certain nuanced "something" that drives America's love affair with countrified bluesy rock.

But don't let me sell you - catch these guys live and you'll be buying their catalogue before the night wears off.

"Carolina" is a nice ballady gem but this is really a music lover's album of undiscovered sound. It's the kind of stuff the marketing "suits" are trying, and failing to discover for us at Starbucks every day.

And yeah, I do know Tom and his faithful sidekick Joe and I like 'em as beer buddies, but that just makes it more satisfying to be the first one on iTunes to brag a bout their music.

Buy this right now, and be proud of the blue collar artisan next door.
