"Strangers In the Valley", LittleHorse, 2007

by Erik Grimaldi

Scaling its self-professed genre of “adventure rock” to new heights, LittleHorse’s “Strangers In the Valley” features the band’s tightest songwriting and most relaxed performances to date. Since 1998, the brothers Horsley (Erich and Joachim) have been exploring the double-piano rock format both in the studio and on the road, and with this their second full-length release they take what was purported to be a 2-CD set and pared it down to a single album complete with close harmonies, a full horn section, Latin rhythms, said keys and more than a passing interest in playful pop music. Where two classically-trained, German-speaking brothers found a passion for South American flair in their eye-winking lounge rock is anybody’s guess; what matters is that their skills are readily apparent, their enthusiasm infectious, and their sense of humor is often at their fingertips.

References to preceding piano men are scattered throughout "Strangers". Opening track “I Want Your Love” with its simple-yet-effectively catchy chorus balanced against its complexly engaging bridge breakdown recalls the mid-90’s, rock-jazz-funk explorations of Harry Connick, Jr. The narrative storytelling and wistful melancholy of “Soldier’s Lullaby” could fit nicely alongside any track on Billy Joel’s "Storm Front" LP. “Flight of the Bumblebee”, one of two non-original compositions featured here, is a modern-day take on dueling virtuosos going head-to-head in a game of one-upsmanship. But LittleHorse truly shines right here in 2007 when the brothers depict character studies of men fondly recalling flights of yearning fancy (“Jupiter”) while later contrasting the innocence of youth in the negotiations between lovers (“Hear No Evil”) and, ultimately, the darker side of love (consider the causal bitterness and resignation of “Second-Rate Sweetheart” with the lines “I’m hooked on Love that is far from perfect/a second-rate sweetheart should cause no alarm/She’ll never leave me even if I deserve it/Don’t have to worry ‘bout another man’s charms").

On "Strangers In the Valley" the Horsley’s showcase songs that traverse both the heart and mind in an engaging and winsome fashion, and their savvy genre-bending should not be overlooked.
