R.E.M and 10,000 Maniacs once made albums like this one
by pianomacJohn Lombardo was a founding member of 10,000 Maniacs and wrote a good deal of the music on their debut The Wishing Chair before leaving the band. Mary Ramsey is his songwriting partner who sings and plays the viola and violin. Together they fronted two 10,000 Maniacs albums, Love Among the Ruins, and the superb The Earth Pressed Flat. This is John & Mary's fourth CD and the others are all worth picking up used. They often use 10,000 Maniacs drummer Jerry and their first two albums, Victory Gardens and The Weedkiller's Daughter, featured the one of a kind talent of Maniacs guitarist Rob Buck. Buck passed away in 2000, and the next John & Mary CD, The Pinwheel Galaxy, featured a more sparse sound without Buck but otherwise was up to the standard of the first two. Peace Bridge is basically more of the same fare, which is very sweet indeed. There is more Buck style guitar on this one. It's another dose of Americana tinged folk rock, with Mary's lilting melodies and string flourishes. Shudder Girl is perhaps the standout track. Autumn in Rio features a flute and a Brazilian beat, while Time Hard is a reggae number that features a trombone and Lombardo on vocals, so they do expand their sound somewhat. All in all this is a rare gem, some of the most thoughful and well done music being made today. Don't miss it!

by DE Music FanThis is an excellent CD! I’ve always liked John & Mary and think that “The World Pressed Flat” was the strongest CD by 10,000 Maniacs which then featured John Lombardo and Mary Ramsey. “Peace Bridge” surpasses their efforts to date.
