Album Review

Miami Beach is great, but hard to launch a band. Too many tourists, not enough locals, and everywhere is far (except the Everglades, but the alligators don't care). So it's inspired oddball, interesting bands, from the Eat and Cichlids to Holy Terrors and Scraping Teeth. Nine-person Father Bloopy (on Dippy Records) is as unpredictable. One minute Roger Houdaille is Jonathan Richman jamming with Brian Eno on the title track, with similar Lou Reed talk-singing, the next he's Ray Davies doing wistful pop tunes like "Pepper Tan" or "Miss Morality." Anyone hard to pin down is hard to sum up, but there're several well-written grungy power-pop songs with English-centric vocals, like Peter Perrett of Only Ones singing Big Star. The base gets a treatment too, in both the standout "Florida No Fault" and "Aventura," and there's humor in "Baby Your Lame" and the art rock "Who Pulled the Child Support?" ~ Jack Rabid, The Big Takeover, All Music Guide

Long time fan of this band. Not REALLY their debut cause there's been bootlegs floating out there since '02 but this is their first official major label release. Frankly it is better than i expected because i was afraid that once they went full on mainstream that they would lose the edge that made them so quirky and special, but instead it actually just made the band sound better overall. Ginger Baby is still one of the coolest songs of the decade - no matter how many times you listen to it. Alot of other great tracks on here for long time fans - its more a compilation of all of the best from their various different bootlegs. Hot Down is on here. Aventura is another super catchy song. Two Tays is catchy as hell too even though it's impossible to figure out what they're actually singing about. Word on the street is that the band is changing its name to the Ex Norwegians which is a cool name too... Haven't seen anythnig official yet. No matter what they're called, the singer is super-cool and the music is totally eclectic and original.
