A Stand Out

I have been lucky enough to have been in a band that has opened for Passafire several times, and they NEVER dissapoint. Their albums are amazing and their shows are even better. They wow audiences all across the country of all musical interests. They are signed to Law Records, but I think they are way more talented than any other group on that label. The emerging "reggae/rock" scene is filled with many mediocre bands that all sound the same and lack originality. Passafire is above and beyond any of these bands and deserve continuing success.

This album is a mind blowing mix of hard rock, reggae, dub, and some psychedelic moments. The album's opener "Divide" is one of my favorite tracks. It is a classic Passafire track as it has funky bass work, reggae vibes, a soaring and crunchy chorus with a tripped out bridge. "Mr. Massive" has a more roots reggae vibe to it, and it has a piano driven chorus. "Asteroid" goes from completely rocking out to reggae only in a way Passafire could. "Who You Know" is a bouncy ska-like track with some funky slap bass work as well. The title track "Submersible" is a constantly changing song with singing, near rapped flows, and a bridge that recalls early day Red Hot Chili Peppers funk rock. "Kilo" is another stand out track that shifts between trippy reggae, dubbed vocals, and rocked out transitions. The song's break down then switches into hard rock, almost recalling work by System of a Down, then it chills back out with start and stop rhthms and then eventually blows your mind with what has to be the dopest bass work I've heard in any style of music for several years. "Unfamiliar" is the albums most mellow track which has some accoustic guitar work and a really cool chilled out guitar solo. The album's closer is "Reverie" which has an aggressive reggae styled verse, another soaring chorus backed by an organ, and some really cool change ups throughout the song. It has chill moments, rock moments, and just when you think the song is over they really ride it out at the end with a strong finish.

I would reccomend this album for anybody that enjoys rock or reggae music. This is the type of reggae album a metal head or rocker would dig, even if they do not like any other reggae music. The driving force behind the music is the bass. It sounds as if Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers joined a reggae band and got himself a set of effects pedals. The drums are always solid, the vocals are always on point, and the keyboardist really adds some interesting sounds and musical layers. Pick this one up!
