Album Review

With song titles like "Transcend" and "Eyes Like the Sea," not to mention the name of the album itself (Field Trip), Floydian Slip are clearly a band out of the LSD-inspired camp. "Rages" deals, somewhat literally and uncritically, with the idea of selling out and, as such, is somewhat emblematic of the album as a whole, which fuses typical rock rhythms with spacey cadences and reggae inflections. Guitarists Olaf Kirsten and Andy Noyes provide the band with vocals. While neither of their voices are particularly egregious in terms of intonation, their delivery is relatively uninspired, delivering less than intellectual lyrics in less than emotional tones. "Eyes Like the Sea" is inadvertently comical, delivering a tangled mix of hilariously mixed metaphors and imagery and forced rhymes. Much of the band's psychedelia is seriously undermined by overuse of strummed acoustic guitars hovering blandly in the background.
