by Scooter McGooterThis guy was the music theory teacher at the Troy State Band Camp, and sure I may not have learned much with the whole thing of him "Teaching" us how to read sharps and flats, because most of us there already knew that. But dude. On the last day of the class we did this history of rock and roll thing and it was awesome. I'd totally go back next only I'm going to be graduated and I won't be allowed. Seriously, listening to this guy during class made it go by just a little bit faster.

by Seoul ImprovThe trombone is the tenor brass instrument and the tuba is the bass counterpart. The euphonium is in the baritone range. Traditionally, this has rarely been considered a real jazz instrument. However, in the hands of Marc Dickman, the euphonium sails thru the challenging musical vocabulary of Duke Ellington, Clifford Brown, Fats Waller, and others.
In addition to Marc's euphonium and supporting piano, bass, and drums, a flute, trumpet, and saxophone juxtapose with the euphonium to create varied front-line situations. Marc's intonation, timing, and improvised choruses are a joy to listen to. He, along with Tom Varner on French horn, Paul Hanson on bassoon, Maxine Roach on viola, and others are breaking free of the trumpet/saxophone monopoly that has too much dominated the frontlines of small-group jazz for so long.
My hat is off to you Marc. I look forward to hearing more CDs from you in the near future.
