Top 10 albums of 2004...

by popfan78

This is an interesting band because they kind of carry a new-wave torch without sounding retro. Imagine if Blondie had formed in 2000 and had Johnny Marr produce them...that would be a pretty apt description of how this album sounds. Beautiful harmonies throughout, a very impressive rhythm section that ebbs and flows without ever competing for space with the lush, amazing guitar work, and a lead vocal that captures the sensuality of (Garbage's) Shirley Mansion, the exuberance of (No Doubt's) Gwen Stefanie, and the pipes of (Evanescence's) Amy Lee. This album is perfect driving music, and takes me back to a time when my biggest worry was wondering if the cute girl in Algebra class was ever going to notice me. In other words, they don't sound like 80's new-wave, but somehow they capture that vibe with a modern soundscape and witty lyrics. Perfect!
