Album Review

Crooked Still isn't reinventing anything on its debut album, which is full of traditional country songs like "Darling Corey," "Shady Grove," and "Flora" (aka "The Lily of the West"), and some familiar copyrighted ones, such as Robert Johnson's "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" and Albert E. Brumley's "Rank Stranger." To the extent there is anything unusual about the quartet's approach, it lies in the instrumentation, which consists of banjo, cello, and double bass, backing Aoife O'Donovan's singing. That's not the most typical lineup for a string band, and it allows space for the three instrumentalists to solo extensively. Still, the group is more about execution than innovation. The players, augmented on a couple of tracks each by fiddle and percussion, mesh well into a band sound, and O'Donovan has a breathy voice reminiscent of Shawn Colvin and Alison Krauss. Together, they give the material a spirited reading that affirms its time-tested quality. So, the members of Crooked Still succeed in being both traditionalists and stylists on their debut album, a significant accomplishment for a young outfit.

Noone does "Darling Cory" like the Doc Watson Family. Noone but Gillian Welch should be aloud to sing "Orphan Girl". And for a more interesting version of "Shady Grove", I would suggest the Crooked Jades(if you can find it) as opposed to Crooked Still. That being said I still think that Crooked Still is one of the best if not the best contemporary bluegrass bands out there. If you're already a fan then you probably already have this album. If you're not familiar with Crooked Still this album sounds exactly like their second album "Shaken By A Low Sound" (which I prefer slightly over this one).As a matter of fact "Look on and Cry" sounds almost like "New Railroad". This is Crooked Still's signature sound and it's just great music.

Jubilant

Wonderful album from a really exciting band. The music is virtuosic without being showy or self obsessed. The instrumentation of Bass, Cello, Banjo and Voice (w/ some fiddle), though non-traditional, can really fly, but they also give wonderful treatments to ballads. Aoife's voice is gorgeous. Plus Shady Grove is one of the happiest songs of all time.

Completely addictive

I can't stop listening to this album, and I don't want to. Aoife's voice is gorgeous, and the instrumentals are unbelievable. Rushad does things on the cello that don't seem possble. They're even better live; that's how I heard them the first time, and I instantly bought the CD and wasn't disappointed at all. As others here have commented, if you like Nickel Creek you'll like this... and if you think Nickel Creek would be good if they weren't overcommercialized and dumbed down for radio, you'll LOVE Crooked Still, I promise!
