Album Review
Fans of hammer dulcimer will be happy with Tom MacKenzie's Second Course, as it features his skill with the instrument. From the relaxed tempo of the gently melodious "Four O'Clock Waltz, Path to the Bog" to the mellow "Flowers O'er the Forest," MacKenzie offers a variety of tunes that fall pleasantly on the ear. "Zimbel Musik von Mesofold" has a distinctive European sound, and is one of a number of songs (listen also to "Bergrosa" on his album Wake Me When It's Over) that MacKenzie has chosen, to good effect. "Clarinet Polka" is a light, spritely, cheerful number, and translates amiably to hammer dulcimer. "Dill Pickle Rag" has the classic ragtime rhythms, and a lovely sparkling effect from the clear, ringing dulcimer notes. The "Farewell to Whiskey, Polka D'Averyron, +" medley is an enthusiastic, upbeat arrangement that will set toes tapping, as well. In all, this is an album for an evening's relaxing listening — put it on and enjoy!
