Album Review
Dream 6 is actually the original name for the band that would become Concrete Blonde, comprised of future Blonde members Johnette Napolitano and James Mankey (Michael Murphy handles drumming). They released this six-song EP in France four years before their self-titled debut and there's nothing very remarkable about it. The songs are straight-ahead, punk-tinged rock, although on songs like "Daddy Lied" Napolitano displays the vocal power that would endear her to fans later. There is also a version of "Rain," which would be redone for Concrete Blonde's 1993 Mexican Moon set. Never released domestically, Dream 6 is a curiosity for the more fervent fans of Concrete Blonde.

by GilleanThis is not a mere curiosity for CB fans. This is the eye-opener for those who enjoy and understand the uniqueness of Johnette and CB. The influence and style of Tomorrow May Never Come's lyrics and music are heard throughout all of CB's "albums". This work is pure CB and cannot be written off as anything lesser. Do not underestimate or shrug off this work.

Raw, early Blonde
by --D.Not really "great" stuff, but you can see the beginnings of Concrete Blonde's signature sound and Napolitano's passionate vocals. She soulds a little immature here, with a little more punk and a little less passion than in her later work. "Rain" is a pretty good piece, as is evidenced by the fact that it's included on "Mexican Moon" years later, only with better production on the later album. The other songs are good, but nothing outstanding.
I think that some people will really like this because it is less produced than most of Blonde's studio music. In fact, it reminds me a lot of their live recordings. Personally, I think the studio production adds a fullness to Napolitano's voice and the instrumentals that is really appealing, so this falls a bit short. It will also be of interest to hardcore fans who can't get enough.
What's a mystery to me is why iTunes has this album, but not Blonde's emponymous first album with classics like "Dance Along the Edge" and "Song for Kim."
