Album Review

Massachusetts native George Kelly has made his home in the Detroit area since 1995, which may account for the strong blues and soul base he brings to the songs on Lucid Intervals, his debut album. A fine slide guitarist, Kelly is also a careful and literate songwriter, somewhat in the John Hiatt vein, and his straight, unaffected vocals on these tracks allows each song room to breathe. The ensemble playing is crisp and full, and the overall tone and sound of the album is a bit like Steely Dan playing the blues. The standout track here is the six-minute "Otis Spann," which unfolds as an intimate homage to the great blues pianist. The concluding cut, "Pyrrhic Victory," is also strong, and has an historic and epic reach that marks Kelly as an artist and writer to watch.

Kelly has produced a standout album that shows both his keen touch with the slide guitar and his deft touch with lyrics that deliver more with each listening. His Get What U Pay For Starts the album with a jolting guitar riff which leads to a cautionary blues tale of greed. Otis Spann is a standout that shows his musical touch, starting with a bare guitar and layering instruments in each verse, growing the song as a metaphor for the growth of Spann's life. His sense of humor is wonderfully displayed in Bluesman, and his Walking Distance is a delightful homage to the Twilight Zone. Pyrrhic Victory ends the selection, not as bluesy, but showcasing the depth of his musical influences. Kelly's work grows on you. His music is well worth the listen on its own, but with each visit, the suprises mount. This is a debut album that is a "must have". Lets hope that Kelly follows this up soon. He is truly an artist to keep your eye on.
