Album Review

A pleasant chill record of roots reggae, John Brown's Body's Spirits All Around Us presents 14 densely layered tracks from the Ithaca, NY-based ensemble. Frontman Kevin Kinsella has a knack for crafting poppy vocal hooks that he skillfully embeds within the dubby grooves (such as on "33 RPM"). The real genius of the album, though, is in the syncopated wall of sound the band creates. Synths, percussion, horns, vocals, and guitars layer together to create a rich blend. One minor complaint is that, perhaps, there is not enough low end on the disc. The band shows its experimental side on cuts like the instrumental "Instrument" (perhaps the highlight of the disc) and the almost industrial-sounding "Ambrosia." On the former, the band's thick dub percolates over a hearty seven minutes, making one wish that the band would someday devote an entire disc to this sort of exploration.

Best Album Ever of All Time

I get tired of most albums quickly and don't like listening to them but not this album. I have been listening to it and using it to wake me up in my alarm clock ever since it was first released and I still love the music.

Song number 13 (Forward Always) is amazing. No matter how bad is my day, this song will put me in a good mood. Can't really explain it, it's just makes me think of family, friends and having a good time.

One of the best albums of all time

This album is magnificent from beginning to end, not one song that is sub-par throughout. It definitely has a unique futuristic/experimental aspect to it despite its roots reggae sound. In terms of musicality, overall composition, and lyrical quality, this album is impeccable. Critically, its hard to say which songs are the best because they are all just as good as the others. The highlight track, in my opinion, is most definitely "Instrument." Other exceptional efforts include "Feel," "33 rpm," "2 Bulls," "Garden Tree," and "Ambrosia." This is a must-own album.
