iTunes Review

So many of our best blues-rock guitar talents left us too soon: Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Danny Gatton. And you can add Eddie Hinton's name to that list without reservation. While he may not be as widely recognized as the others, the Jacksonville, Florida native graced a number of classic soul and blues sessions for artists including Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, and Elvis Presley. Hinton's own blue-eyed soul, of which Letters from Mississippi is his best, echoes the rich, soulful sounds of the artists he accompanied, with deep, southern-fried guitar lines and ardent, big-hearted vocals.

It doesn't get any better.

Put simply, this is a KILLER cd. Long before iTunes got hold of it, I listened to a sample of the title track and bought the cd just on the strength of that brief taste. Man, this is a feast of rockin' soul music, and the 'Letters From Mississippi' track is just the appetizer. The spirituality of 'Everybody Needs Love' is genuine, and if you don't find yourself dancing and playing air guitar to "It's All Right," you haven't found joy yet in this lifetime! And you'll find youself aching when Hinton taps into his hurtin' vein on "I Want a Woman." Having mentioned those songs, 'Wet Weather Man' is my favorite, no question, it's fun and funny and funky. Last, and I don't say this lightly because Sam Cooke is my all time favorite singer, I believe that even Sam would have been deeply impressed by Eddie Hinton's handling of "I'll Come Running Back To You." In summation, this is a classic cd. If you don't own an Eddie Hinton recording, this is a fine place to start.

My Searching Is Over

I'm used to only finding one or maybe two cds a year that really make me sit up and take notice. But in March (2006) I picked up Eddie Hinton's "Dear Y'all" cd (worth leaving iTunes to go find it, believe me) and it knocked me for six. Voice, writing, arrangements, all in the best Muscle Shoals soul tradition -- the cd had everything I wanted to hear. I though somehow that cd had to be a one-off, a fluke, that nobody could rip my heart out/make me cry out in pain & jump for joy/laugh out loud with any consistency. Then the 'Letters From Mississippi' cd arrived (I still like to buy a tangible product). Here I sit, 6 months later, now owning everything available from Eddie Hinton, knowing he was no fluke, no rip-off, no imitator. If you don't want to buy the whole album, try a couple of songs at least: the title track rocks some blues, 'Everybody Needs Love' is a classic, 'Sad and Lonesome' will make you tap your foot even as you identify with the emotions. 'I Want a Woman' is so raw, so lonely, so humble, it'll leave you helpless. And 'Wet Weather Man' never fails to make me smile and dance. But pick any of them, it really doesn't matter because this is a great, great album.

Some of the best music you don't own . . .

In an age when "absence of passion" or "calculated" describes most of the music bin, Eddie Hinton has got more energy than any other white soul singer; matching Springsteen in sheer intensity, but with a deep Southern blues/soul/rock sound that's all his own. "Letters from Mississippi" is coherent and intense, marked by musicality, characteristically fabulous guitar work, and a raw vocal style that hangs just off the beat, somewhere between Otis Redding and David Ruffin. I know of no other way to spend $10 that's as sure to make you happy as buying an Eddie Hinton record. This is one of the two best ("Dear Y'all" is also highly recommended, but not yet on iTunes).

Biography

Born: June 15, 1944 in Jacksonville, FL

Genre: Blues

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s

Guitarist, songwriter, and singer Eddie Hinton may be one of the great, unheralded white blues musicians of all time. Fortunately, fans can latch onto a few recordings on compact disc. Hinton died far too young at the age of 51 on July 28, 1995, yet his guitar playing can be heard all over famous recordings...
