you gotta love it

by ThePotter'sClay

It's not as detailed or lush as the recordings from the "Music of Cambodia" series from Celestial Harmonies, but you gotta love it. This album is simple and sweet --- a labor of love created by the musical master Bun Loeung and his small ensemble. The album has a very bright, cheery sound to it, which "Music of Cambodia" generally doesn't. I only wish that the group hadn't substituted Northumbrian smallpipes and recorders for the traditional sralai instrument (according to their website.) It makes the album sound a little less authentic than it would have had they used strictly traditional instruments. But minor things aside, this album is just wonderful. It captures all that is good in Khmer classical music and maintains a wonderfully sunny sound throughout. You gotta love it. No wonder it won the Just Plain Folks Music Awards "Best Ethnic/World Album"! Extremely highly recommended to anyone interested in classical Cambodian music.

This brings back the cacophony of Phnom Penh and I can relive it. Weddings and parties and dancing around plants....sigh...Cambodian culture. I miss the differences.

Khmer Bmpay Goan

I was amazed to find Cambodian songs in iTune, because I have never expected. This song is simply sung from the heart of a Khmer mother to her precious child.
