Album Review

While Yuma House's self-titled debut album from 1998 had garnered them substantial college radio support, the Washington, D.C.-based power pop quartet's 2002 follow-up, Future Perfect, made substantially bigger waves. In fact, local publication The Journal went so far as to declare the album its Local CD of the Year — impressive considering the plethora of amazing Washington, D.C., bands, namely Fugazi, who had released their much-celebrated Argument album the same year — and the paper's music writer, Lou King, referred to the Yuma House song "Smiles" not only as "brilliant," but also his personal "song of the year." Though Future Perfect is a little short on songs, including only seven of them, it compensates with additional multimedia features, including a MPEG video for "(Write Off) Summer." Overall, Yuma House takes a further step toward power pop perfection with Future Perfect.

Sounds of the Summer

by DougsPopRocks1

It's a shame that Washington DC lost one of its only Powerpop bands when Yuma House stopped performing. As a fan of Tuscadero and the haunts of DC in the 90s like the Black Cat and 930 Club, this is the kind of music I want to hear when I go out. Yuma House sounds like The Rosenbergs for fans from NY - and that's not a bad thing at all. It's sincere emotive songwriting with smart lyrics. But the emotion never drags the songs down, like a Fountain of Wayne song - there's always a snappy undertone that keeps you smiling as you feel something real. Like the summer, you know? Love this album and wish these guys would put something new out yesterday.
