Album Review

This album really does deliver on its title, because it's tuneful and sunny enough for children to enjoy, yet also clever enough for their parents to appreciate. The conceits behind the songs are playful and true to toddler life: the instantly recognizable subject of "Mine!," the bad-hair-day saga of "My Hair Had a Party Last Night," and the morning household chaos of "Baby's Got the Car Keys." More importantly, these are largely performed in a live setting, which allows the duo to engage in stage banter and one-upmanship, as when "18 Wheels on a Big Rig" turns into a counting contest — in Roman numerals (!). Trout Fishing also includes a few of their "grown-up" tunes on the album; these aren't anything that children can't listen to as well, but frankly, these songs just aren't as compelling. The children's set on Family Music Party, though, is a fine addition to any parent's collection of children's music.

Trout Fishing STILL Is the Best.

This brings back some memories. I was listening to it again, and I realized that it's still as funny and basically awesome as ever. Good for everyone, not just 7-year-olds. Listen to the audience, and you hear the parents laughing, not just the kids.

Still amusing to me at 17!

Well, reading DP Fan's review, I can see I'm not the only one who listened to TFiA as a child, yet can still enjoy their music in college!

This album is wonderful if you just want something light hearted and fun, without having to worry about whether or not the content is appropriate for children. Plus, the lyrics are clever enough that adults can enjoy the music as well. I was lucky enough to be able to speak to TFiA twice on Radio Disney when I was younger, and both times I asked: "Why Stairway to Heaven?", which, if you've listened to The Window, you will know exactly why I asked this, and, both times, they answered, "Well, it's funny!"

And that, my friends, sets the tone of the entire album.

these guys are awesome.

I used to listen to Trout a lot when I was in elementary school, and I had this album on cassette, and now I find it on iTunes...awesome. I saw them twice as a kid. TFIA is better live than in the studio, and this recording proves it. Even now that I'm in college I still get a kick out of them, and you will too.
