These Songs Are Hysterically Good
by The JrcThe production values on this seem better than on comparable recordings from this genre. I'm not a fa-so-la expert, nor a religous person, but I'm what you might call spiritual, and these songs really embellish the best of this type of music. It's really intense stuff, but I've found it great for driving, running, meditating, everything you use music for, etc. It's excessive of any purpose, though -- it's a bit of a link to the faithful exuberance of any belief that life is intense enough to rejoice in mournful soaring ballads like this. It's from another world we should keep trying to reach, for a few moments, sobbing faith.
Shape-note at some of its finest
by B.R. LaRoweWhoever it was that decided to put a few microphones in the middle of the Western Massachusetts Sacred Harp Convention did the world a favor. While there are some moments when the sopranos are stealing the show, the majority of the songs in this album are genuine and honest renditions of songs that span generations and faiths. The wide open chords and phrases create a simple, pleasant sound that's very egalitarian: a common person can make really nice sounding music. And that wide open structure creates freedom for the singers. No longer worried about sounding exactly right, the singers often holler their notes as their passion dictates. Whatever happens to tickle the singer's fancy, be it themes of redemption or vengance or bliss, that idea can be launched out of the throat, askew from the other voices, and infuse a phrase with sudden power and life. Songs are often sung with such fervence that they border on screams. And I've always loved that about music. The exceptional musician can take any note, chord, or phrase and sing or play it to the breaking point. A little louder or a little higher and the note would shatter apart like Carl Lewis and the National Anthem. But barely controlling the note, the musician can create a very powerful sound. If you're new to Sacred Harp singing, this is definitely worth looking into. If you're familiar, I believe that the Convention did the art justice.
