Album Review

Simultaneously gruff and intimate, Caroline Herring's second album, Wellspring, offers 11 tracks of Southwestern acoustic folk-based country with appropriate focus on her obvious songwriting talent and her equally powerful voice. Like her soulful country contemporaries (Kim Richey, Shelby Lynne, Patty Griffin), Herring's breathy sensuality punctuates her themes of love, loss, and heartache, and her understated vocals, while never over-reaching, often swell and break under the strain of the song's own emotion. The leadoff track, "Trace," sets the pace for the entire record, and Kelly Willis unobtrusively lends her vocal talents to the album's highlight, "Jewels." The inclusion of the parlor blues number "Texas Two Step" is a little incongruous amid the rest of the straight-ahead folk songs, but ultimately proves the versatility that Herring is capable of.

Another Great Mississippi Star

by ronn pierce

Usually mumbling nothing but monosyllabic phrases is not associated with greatness. But listening to Caroline's sultry voice left me almost speechless, with only the ability to mutter things like “Wow”, “Damn” “cool” “nice”. Did Lyle Lovett father a child in Mississippi????? Listen and decide for yourself. (no resemblence thank God)

Buy this CD and watch this young lady’s career. Yet again, another Mississippi artist is headed to the top. Hey Caroline, say hello to the King when you finally get in the club! Ronn

Set this one to "Repeat All" and let it roll

This is what heartfelt singing/songwriting is all about. Wonderful tunes and lyrics. Thankfully not over-produced. Caroline sings in a beautifully deep voice that you never get tired of listening to then will hit high notes that you wouldn't think were in her range, but she pulls it off without a hitch. I hope her future recordings stay as true to acoustic Americana/roots music as this one does.

Way to go Caroline!!
