Album Review

Some people equate commercial success with hard work and perseverance; others say it is simply a matter of luck. Actually, it is a combination of those things in many cases. Being proactive and focused certainly helps, but luck has a lot to do with it as well. Patti Rothberg was very unlucky when, through no fault of her own, EMI's U.S. division was abruptly discontinued in the late 1990s and she found herself without a record deal. But Rothberg took the proactive approach; instead of throwing in the towel, she continued to perform, write and record, and her second album, Candelabra Cadabra, was independently released in 2001. This 53-minute CD didn't receive the promotional muscle of a major label, and it didn't enjoy nearly as much exposure as Rothberg's 1996 debut, Between the 1 and the 9. Regardless, Candelabra Cadabra is a highly respectable sophomore outing from Rothberg, who handles most of the songwriting herself but has a little help from guitarist Freddie Katz (who produced the album). Candelabra Cadabra is unpredictable and enjoyably diverse, ranging from the punky power pop of the infectious "Dish It Out" to the bluesy folk-rock leanings of "The Wry It Girl" to the psychedelic touches of "Delicate Matters." Rothberg acknowledges glam rock on an inspired cover of David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream," but whatever style she embraces — and whether she is being humorous, sarcastic, angry, philosophical, quirky, or poignant — the New York City resident never fails to be recognizable on this excellent sophomore outing.

Simply Marvelous!!

If you are a person who enjoys music that rushes to the soul, you must experience Patti Rothberg. "Candelabra Cadabra" is Patti's 2nd CD, released back in 2001. I recall buying her first CD in 1996, "Between the One and Nine" ( Fabulous!! )...Well, there are several terrific tunes in this collection. My personal favorite is "Nothing I Can Say". Try listening to this sweet, mild rocking tune two or three times, then try to stop thinking about it? ( JUST TRY! )..the guitar work ( Freddie Katz ) precise and perfect, as always. While you are at it, don't forget Patti's LATEST CD, "Double Standards"...I am a person who loves the energy of the great music of the 60's, I also love the texture and sounds of the 80's, well, Patti seems to magically capture the two, and combine them....go ahead and get all 3 CD's.....You'll be doing your mind, heart and soul a favor, TRUST ME......!!

Patti you are bether then ever

Hear's The Real Deal...

by Art Farmer

Sometimes an singer songwriter happens upon a "sound" that they then trademark and milk for the duration of their career. Less often though, an ARTIST creates the appropropriate environment for each collection of songs, for each record. The latter is true for Patti Rothberg's "Candelabra Cadabra".

Patti's exquisite and surreal songwriting, musicianship and voice, coupled with the multilevel and majestic production of Freddie Katz make this album almost impossible to put down, both literally and figuratively.

The fact that Patti chose to move in a new direction and not just release son of, or rather, "Daughter of Between the 1 and the 9" is proof of her Artistic expansion. Great artists change and grow, they can't sit still and be the same from endeavor to endeavor. It's not possible.

So with it clear that "Candelabra Cadabra" isn't a repeat performance by a one trick pony, (much as some would've liked it to be), it's time for the whiners to get over the change and listen closer, with fresh ears, there's so much beauty to hear.

This is actually one of those great collaborations by Artist and Producer, now so rare in the "lite" of trendy, auto-tuned, "me too" flash in the pan fabrications by this weeks "hot" "producer"/writer and label. "Candelabra Cadabra" (or "CC" as I like to call it) is the real deal, the classic case, an archetypal standard setter.

This is the sound of a REAL ARTIST progressing and exploring the metamorphosis of creation as she experiences it. This process is only complimented and facilitated by Freddie Katz's adept production. As time passes "CC" will come to be known as one of the great Rothberg releases. "CC" that to your friends.
