Album Review

This trio walks a very fine line between folkie authenticity and grating pretense. Singer/guitarist Tim Eriksen is a brilliant player whose renditions of "Gypsy Davy" and, especially, "The Dying Californian" are high points of the album. Peter Irvine, who sings and plays the frame drum, is also a good singer, but his raw-throated style and Appalachian ornaments sometimes make him sound like something of a poseur, as on the slightly embarrassing "Old Virginia." He plays a mean frame drum though, especially on the instrumental "Booth Shot Lincoln/Hangman's Reel," and his duets with Cath Oss on "Seven Long Years" and "Katy Cruel" work quite well. Eriksen contributes a very nice modal clawhammer banjo tune entitled "Sugar Baby," but it's not at all clear why the song needed to go on for nine minutes. The program ends, interestingly, with the full-out punk rock of "Jersey City," which turns out to be one of the most effective tunes on the whole album. Imagine Hüsker Dü performing Child ballads, and you'll have an idea of what it sounds like. Wouldn't mind hearing a whole album like that.

Cordelia's Dad present an amazing interpretation of historic Americana. First album for the group, that for the most part, is purely acoustic. Eriksen's use of open tunings lends well to the driving rhythms that dominate this album. Comet is a great introduction to the band's work and lead me to delve further into Eriksen's library. The band's "one-take" approach to making music is a breath of purity and rawness. On Sugar Babe, that is Tim and a fretless banjo playing for you straight. Take it for what it is; pure music. Highly recommend that Eriksen's solo work "Every Sound Below" accompany this.

I don't grudge the All Music Guide reviewer his opinion, but if he's going to make negative comments, he should at least know what he's talking about. Tim Eriksen is the lead singer, not Peter Irvine, and for more songs in the vein of Jersey City, one need look no further than Cordelia's Dad's own How Can I Sleep? Although this isn't my favorite Cordelia's Dad album (I'm partial to How Can I Sleep? and Spine), it's still great stuff, a totally original approach to mostly traditional material.
