The whole whole human experience

by Marissa "Con Gusto"

James Hurley has prepared a highly underrated treat here, opening to surprise the listener with the crunchy, dark and yet deliciously indulgent groove of “Creature” it leads into the gorgeously sparse “Take Me Away.” Although it’s seen on the entire album on the songs “Take Me Away”, “I Wonder” and “Somedays” the most striking feature to be seen is James’ ability to lyrically and musically personify a mood, place in time and feeling. The journey, wind, excitement and open highway is painted beautifully in the twelve-string solo on “Take Me Away”, the sense of wonder is truly evoked in “I Wonder”, and the gentle waves reflected in the opening notes of “Somedays” to a build tumultuous crashing in James’ powerful strumming.

From the jazzy elements reflected in “Whisper” and “The Girl.” Folk is also found through out the album, on “The Girl” as well to the toe-tapping “She Still Loves Me”, the adventure and lovely lunacy (unrelated note: a fellow moon lover) of "London Bridge" and the incredible ending to an intense opening, the subtle “Light Your Smile.” Perfected blues and classic rock and roll on “Trouble Up Ahead” (if that song doesn’t get you moving, you need to hop in the ground and bury yourself) and the heart-aching “Walk Away.” Then slightly flamenco or Spanish lilts found in many of the acoustic numbers as well as “When I’m With You.” Pure rock/pop balladry on “I’ll Find A Way” and a soulful r&b variation on “Almost Believe” but Hurley-fied in being that it lacks typical shmaltz and speaks truth. Not only a wizard of the strings, James’ lyrics are a masterpiece in and of themselves. Bear in mind these elements and influences are found throughout all of the album, on ALL of the tracks not just the specified ones.

There is no genre, no mood, no emotional range that this album does not speak to. This brilliant creation is (yes) eclectic and speaks to the whole human experience. That is it’s beauty of it above all.

Great Music...

James Hurley is a troubadour… This is a masterful piece of true music. James Hurley is a wonderful storyteller grabbing the listener and taking them through the emotions of his experiences. These albums are a must have for all collections.

The Sun and the Moon is a CD that you will listen to over and over again. His self-titled is another for the collection. His blues are incredible… I really hope he releases another Blues album as his mastering of the art is only touched in this compilation.

You will not be disappointed.
