Album Review
Although released on her Jazz Doll label and using a rhythm section arranged by jazz pianist Bruce Barth, Liza Lee's recording is as much folk music as it is jazz. Her small voice takes a little getting used to, but it becomes more effective with each listen. Her sincerity in rendering the lyrics to a wide variety of songs makes the tunes sound like they were written for her even though she only actually composed the title cut. Clearly, Liza Lee only sings songs in which the words mean a lot to her, which gives deeper meaning to these renditions than they usually receive. This haunting disc is well worth checking out.

by Jasper Digg-ityI love this collection of tunes. Ms. Lee put her heart and soul into this project and it shows. Her rendition of classics like Strawberry Fields Forever and Cornflake Girl are probably most sucessful, but I prefer her wonderful takes on Bowie's Lady Grinning Soul, Ani Difranco's Loom and classics like Baltimore Oriole. Also her upbeat version of Love for Sale is totally original. But probably best of all is the stunning original title track, Scarlet Mark. What a haunting melody! With such deep lyrics to ths tune, it begs me to wonder when an all-original project will be released???!!!
