by StenzzTake Out The Fences is more political than Celebrate and shows his maturation both as a person and as a musician. This effort, while certainly funky, is less Afro-Beat than Celebrate and more Afro-Carribean or even Kwassa Kwassa, Ironically, while Take Out The Fences contains the tune "Anikulapo Kuti", Yawo is moving away from sounding like Fela and focusing on his own personality. Definitely worth a listen!
Dig Into the Infectious Afro-beat Grooves!
by feloniousmonkYawo Attivor is a freedom-fighter from Togo, yet another West African nation mired in corruption. He maintains his base here in the MidWest, Minneapolis, MN or Madison, WI, holding together as many musically minded compatriots to contribute to his funky world-beat jams.
"Take Out The Fences" is album number two from the bassman, and it spans many styles...are you a Fela-phile? a Marley maniac? a Latin-groove lover? It all fits in here, somewhere, somehow. Songs of Togo heroes bump into calls for resistance and pleas for common understanding. Not hard to find a common ground when the sounds are as sweet or as booty-shake-inducing as Yawo provides. As he likes to say, "find something special, and shake it." This is some hard, funky stuff. If you don't end up shaking it, you're missing something!
Yawo's music provides food for the soul and well as the hips. Dig the horns, the guitars, the drums, the bass...and stop the nonsense, take down the fences. Lower your defences, get into these grooves, you'll be glad you did.
