Album Review

It's difficult to come to a single conclusion on Independence Meal. It's clever and humorous, though not really a comedy album. Alix Olson's message is powerful — anti-George Bush, anti-big business, pro-environment, and desperate to lend a voice to the marginalized, she speaks for the true democratic spirit of America like Howard Zinn (who makes a guest appearance) with an art folk band instead of a typewriter. Still, it's not a Zinn or Chomsky type of political record. Olson is incisive, though: "You've gotta steal back the truth even from NPR, these days" ("Pirates") is a line that rings so true in an age where even the would-be leftist radio station seems ineffectually moderate. Unfortunately, Olson's breathy spoken word rants over spare guitar picking come off prickly and somewhat annoying. And it's not the words — Olson's message is amazing — but the delivery, which would fit quite well at a Boho open mike night but isn't exactly the stuff of rousing rock releases. Perhaps it's unfair to view Independence Meal as a rock or folk album, or even a political comedy record. The music seems amelodic, shambly, and a little dull. But taken as a poetry record, from the broken protests of the title track to the hot sexual politics of "Subway Lips," Alix Olson has a commanding presence that forces the listener to either pay attention or press stop.

I actually haven't bought the album but I love the three songs of hers that I own...anyways, I just wanted to say that I think Itunes mislabeled the song 8 x 10 as dorothea tanning. It's the 5:43 second long one and I think it should be called 8 x 10. Sorry if this is wrong!

A Solid Sophomore CD

On "Independence Meal," Alix Olson's delivery isn't full of the rousing rage or jubilant joy that shimmered off of every track from her last release. While nothing is less deeply-felt on this record, it is a quieter anger, "less rage than sad," as she so eloquently put it in "subtle sister" (here reprised as an "Extra Track"). This manifests itself in the soft growls of "pirates," the long, shuddering breaths of "dorothea tanning," and indeed even in her reprise of "subtle sister," which is delivered with a worn intensity almost entirely absent from the prior, louder version. However, while this may be a different Alix (weathered perhaps by the two extra years under the Bush administration that transpired between this release and her last), it is hardly an inferior one. Olson never runs out of good poetry, and while a listener may at first long for the vibrance of "Built Like That," there's something to be said for the sound of a poet who's withstood a storm or two.

I can't believe it.

In the description of Alix's album, they called her annoying. Obviously they have no idea who this woman is or what she is capable of. And they have probably never seen her live either. She had me sitting in awe covered in goosebumps the entire night.
