Album Review

The Golem Shuffle certainly keeps one guessing. The opening number, "Motherload," features some strong trombone playing by Dan Gottshall over hip-hop rhythms before Joe Wesson launches a complex but somewhat annoying rap. Tenor saxophonist Gary Thomas works well with Gottshall on that piece and the funky "Alice the Goon." Wesson returns on "Sybase" and "Zelda," but the other selections are more straight-ahead, with solid solos from pianist Tim Murphy, guitarist Sheryl Bailey, and Miriam Kaul (mostly on soprano). While there are times when Gottshall (who is a fine player with plenty of personality) shows that jazz and hip-hop can mix, the rapping on three numbers is a distraction that lowers the program's quality. Still, much of this set holds one's interest, and it is good to see players stretching themselves.
